niche marketing
Internet marketers are always talking about niche market research as if it’s a guarded magical process that only a few insiders truly understand. Well, we’re going to show you a quick and easy, step-by-step process for doing niche marketing research that you can start using immediately.

How does that sound?

Pretty cool, huh?

So, let’s get started.

Step One: Your Goal

The goal of this process is to come to the end of it with a brand new niche market that you know you can go into and start making money almost immediately. It’ll be a hungry market, with hungry buyers, and enough openings for you to slip in without anyone noticing.

Step Two: Amazon.com

We’re after a clearly defined niche market that is already populated by a group of hungry buyers. So, we’re going to start at Amazon.com. At the top of the first page, next to the search box, select the book department, and go. In the left hand navigation column, you’ll notice all the different book topics. Pick one that interests you. Let’s say, Parenting & Families.

Now, you’ll notice a new set of topics in the left hand column. Pick one. Let’s say, Family Relationships. And from that navigation column, let’s choose Divorce.

Step Three: Reviews

Our first glance at the books on divorce will focus on the number of reviews for each book. Reviews indicate a market that’s involved and active, which is what we’re looking for. At the time of this writing, you’ll see review numbers such as 149, 29, 90, 30, 62, 42 and so on. These are wonderful numbers. They demonstrate a clearly-active group. If you were seeing much smaller numbers, let’s say in the 0-10 range, then you’d have to be a little concerned about your market. Though it’s only one consideration in this process.

Step Four: Titles

Next, you want to take a look at the titles. Even though this section is about divorce, you’ll find titles such as How to Survive the Loss of a Love, and The Good Bye Book: How To Heal A Broken Heart In 30 Days, and Rebuilding: When Your Relationship Ends. These are all possible sub-niches. Not just about divorce, but how to survive the loss of a relationship. So you might want to note these potential sub-niches for future reference.

Step Five: Amazon.com Numbers

Next, you want to take a look at the sales ranking of these titles. Helping Your Kids Cope With Divorce is #3,670 in Books. This can be found by clicking on the book cover and moving down the page to the section title Product Details. Amazon.com Sales Rank for this title is 3,670. Since they carry millions of titles, this is an excellent ranking. Make note of it.

Step Six: Dummies

Does the topic have an Idiot’s Guide or a Dummies book? In the case of divorce, yes, there’s a Divorce For Dummies title. This is a plus. It demonstrates that research has already been conducted in this niche and the folks behind the Dummies books felt it was a profitable niche to go after. It’s not devastating if there isn’t a Dummies title in your niche, but it’s a definite plus if there is one.

Step Seven:

Check out the competition. If you enter “divorce” in a Google search, you’ll find that there are over 66 million pages on the Internet with that word in the content. You can’t compete with 66 million pages.  You’ll never be seen.  So you want to find a niche within divorce that you can go after. To do this, go to the Google External Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal) and enter the term “divorce.” Then start going down the list and entering the supplied keywords into a Google search inside quotes (for example: “divorce dating”) until you find a group of keywords without tons of competition.

Now you’ve done your niche market research and you’ve got yourself a niche market.

Niche marketing usually refers to small or moderate size businesses or farms that produce a specialty product or service for a limited segment of the market. Market niches can be geographic areas, a specialty industry, ethnic or age groups, or any other particular group of people. Sometimes a niche product can be a variation of a common product that is not produced and marketed by the main marketing firms.

By definition, then, a business that focuses on a niche market is addressing a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream providers. A niche market may be thought of as a narrowly defined group of potential customers.

It is obvious from the table that niche marketing is everywhere. Sometimes the niche served is so narrow that the product is aimed at one small group within a market. One example is the dairy operation supplying kosher milk to a large Jewish population in New York City. The dairy producer hired a rabbi full time to observe the management and milking activities on the dairy so the milk produced can be sold in the kosher market. In this case the dairy producer has a portion of the market to himself.

First of all, you have to understand what niche marketing is exactly. Think about it this way: the Internet is a highly crowded place with millions of people surfing the web at any given moment. The chances of getting your product or business out there to enough people to get a sale are very low. Not to mention, there are millions of online businesses doing the same thing you are trying to market to enough people to get enough sales to make enough money.

Using this definition, niche marketing is the process of finding and serving market segments, that are too small for big companies to serve them profitably defined by the volume of sales. The key to niche marketing is to find and develop a service or product that is in high demand for the small group of potential customers, but the number of these customers is still high enough, so that you can be potentially profitable nonetheless. The service or product should be selected based on the unmet customer need. To maintain a profitable volume of sales, niche marketers are reliant on the loyalty of customers. To increase the customer loyalty it is important to focus on the quality of the product or service provided, this will generate customer satisfaction, trust in the product or service, and consequently sales.

The term “niche” was first used by ecologists to describe a species’ position and use of resources within its environment. When used in business the term implies a situation or an activity perfectly suited to a person or a given type of personality. This concept has been extended from persons to products on the market. Whereas a niche in the strict sense can be a working position or an area suited to a person who occupies it, the market niche is perfectly suited for a product of human labor.

Do it all over again when your niche has grown old. Look at where your market has been and where it’s going. Brainstorm new products and services to add to your business mix and be prepared to respond to change. The secret to successful niche marketing is the ability to grow and evolve with the times.

Niche marketing is the process of finding and serving profitable market segments and designing custom-made products or services for them. For big companies those market segments are often too small in order to serve them profitably as they often lack economies of scale. Niche marketers are often reliant on the loyalty business model to maintain a profitable volume of sales.

By cutting through the competition with niche marketing finding the perfect niche market that they’re overlooking. While a small business may not be able to compete with the giant sites on their level. The truth is, they can’t compete with a good niche site on any level.

Take a look around the Internet niche markets are thriving. Practically every product or service sold on the Internet is part of it’s own unique niche market, a specific field or area of interest. And it’s filled with eager, hungry buyers willing to spend their last dollar on what they are passionately interested in.

Nowadays it seems like everyone and their brother claims that they are a niche marketer and it’s so obvious to see that they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Niche marketing is not about marketing popular items to the general public. That’s what the big corporations do and if you’re operating from a small bedroom office in the corner of your house, guess what? You’re not a big corporation and I’m going to give you a few reasons why you suck at niche marketing.

Reason #1 - You don’t even know what niche marketing means. That’s okay because I’m going to explain it to you so you will finally know. Niche marketing is this: finding a small profitable corner of a larger area of a market. So if you’re selling golf products, you’re not niche marketing if you’re selling golf clubs. You’re niche marketing if you’re selling golf gloves and not just golf gloves themselves, but certain types of golf gloves that people want to buy on a regular basis. It could be a certain color golf glove, it could be a certain size golf glove, or it could even be a certain brand of golf glove that people want to buy on a regular basis.

Reason #2 - You have no idea what questions are being asked in your niche. For some unknown reason you don’t read any blogs pertaining to your market and you don’t participate in any forums or online groups pertaining to your market either. To be able to effectively market to your niche, you have to go to where they are and find out what they are talking about. This includes finding out what questions they were asking and trying to offer them answers to their problems. I know, I know. It sounds too simple to be right, doesn’t it?

Reason #3 - You’re all flash and no substance. What this basically means is that you’re too obvious about making a buck that you offer your market no real value. They can see you coming with your sales pitch from a mile away and start running like crazy to get away from you and I would too. You’ll find your niche marketing efforts to be one hundred times more effective when you offer your market valuable information that addresses and even solves their problems then just sales pitch after sales pitch. To do anything else just drives them away from you, leaving your pockets empty.

I have no doubt in my mind that you feel that you can really offer your niche something of value, but if you’re doing any of the things I mentioned above, all you’re doing is just hurting yourself. Get back to knowing what your niche wants, providing them with solutions for their problems, and delivering quality content about their needs and you’ll start to soar to the top of your market it no time at all.

Many people out there are taking unfair advantage of the Internet and the opportunities to conduct niche marketing on the Internet. More often than not, unfortunately, many of these brave soldiers fail in the endeavor of setting up a niche market.

It’s true that most of the money can be found in niche marketing. Why? Because niche markets by their very nature cater to a very specific need in a highly-specialized manner. And these very specific needs are demanded by very exacting people who can pay top dollar. More than that, if you are to provide of these needs, you ought to be the sole provider. It’s almost as if to find a niche market is to monopolize the supply of that service.

An example would be providing ballet shoes so flexible, you can fold the shoe at a 45-degree angle and still be able to keep anyone on their toes. Very few ballet dancers can do that and only one shoemaker provides for it.

The scam here is not the fact that niche market providers will cheat you. Instead the scammers are those business folks who author self-help books and CDs telling you that creating a niche market is as natural as blinking.

These people could fool you into pouring all your capital into a venture that is likely doomed to fail because the risk of the market niche is the high risk of running out of customers or gaining competition.

Many people who seriously employ internet marketing strategy despair at the idea of discovering a niche market. They know that the likelihood of that is parallel to finding the Holy Grail in your garage.

The market niche is unique because it cannot survive if there is competition. The niche market should be clear and free-exactly like a monopoly so that the producer can be free. This is the first cut; the second cut comes from the customers.

You product has to be so special, so specific, so attuned to the needs of your customers that you need time to perfect your craft. More often than not, niche market products are custom-made for each customer.

This kind of production takes a lot of time and that is why the market needs to be free of competition so that they can pour their efforts onto the product. But that is not where the cut can be inflicted. Clients of niche markets are discerning, they pay top dollar to get (if not exactly, then something better than) what they want.

Here comes the rub, if you are not the best at what you do, then forget it! This means, people who have no ambition except to laze about their houses and who are looking for easy money on the Internet cannot possibly undertake the rigors of maintaining a niche market.

Okay, maybe I was a little hard on niche marketing but this article is not made to discourage you from the activity. As a matter of fact, if there’s any marketing technique I would suggest it would be niche marketing. However, you need to understand that niche marketing is not impossible but it also isn’t easy. You need to give it time and effort. If you don’t know the specific strategies, then you need to give time to start learning. Niche marketing is not a magic solution to your financial needs. It is a job, and it requires commitment.
